How to Measure for a Barn Door

Accuracy is Everything. Built for a Perfect Fit.

Getting the measurements right is the most critical part of your barn door project. If the door is too small, it won’t cover the opening. If it’s too large, it won’t slide properly.

Follow our sizing formulas below to ensure your custom door looks and functions flawlessly.

The Sizing Formula

For a barn door to provide full privacy and cover the casing, it must be larger than the actual opening. Use these industry-standard calculations:

Recommended Calculations

  • Door Width: Opening Width + 4" to 6" Total
  • Door Height: Opening Height + 1" to 3" Overlap
  • Track Clearance: 6" to 8" above the door casing
  • Sliding Space: Total Door Width (on the wall)

Header Clearance Check

The 4-Point Check

  • 1. Measure Width: Measure the inside width of the opening. Add at least 2" of overlap per side (4" total) to eliminate gaps.
  • 2. Measure Height: Measure from the floor to the top of the opening. We recommend the door sits 1" higher than the opening.
  • 3. Header Clearance: Ensure there is enough structural wall space above the opening to mount the heavy-duty track.
  • 4. Wall Obstructions: Check for light switches, outlets, or baseboards that might block the door from sliding flush.

Measurement FAQ

What if I have trim/casing?

Measure from the outside edges of the trim. Your barn door should cover the trim entirely for the cleanest look.

How much space do I need for the track?

Standard hardware requires 6 inches of space between the top of the door and the ceiling.

Do I need a floor guide?

Yes. Every barn door needs a floor guide to prevent it from swinging out. We include these with every custom door build.

Can a barn door be too heavy for my wall?

Our doors are solid wood. If you don't have studs in the right places, we provide a "Header Board" to distribute the weight safely.
