How to Measure for a Barn Door

We broke down the steps so you can easily measure the exact size needed for your custom barn door. Accurate measurements ensure the perfect fit and smooth sliding operation.

1. Measure Door Width

Measure the inside horizontal frame distance (A).

Barn doors must be wider than the opening for proper coverage.

This is the standard method used when determining barn door size for proper coverage.

A + 6" = Total Door Width

2. Measure Door Height

1) Measure the inside vertical frame distance (B).

2) Barn doors must be taller than the opening for proper coverage.

B + 3" = Total Door Height

3. Measure Ceiling Clearance

The door needs room above it for the sliding track and hardware. Measure the distance between the top of the door opening and the ceiling (C).

C = Ceiling Clearance

4. Measure Sliding Room

To fully open, the barn door must slide completely past the opening. Measure the wall space available next to the door (D).

D = Sliding Distance

Quick Measurement Checklist

  • A = Inside width of door frame
  • B = Inside height of door frame
  • C = Space between door frame and ceiling
  • D = Wall space available for door to slide
