Simple. Smart. Beautiful.
PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) glass or film scatters light when it has no power, so it looks frosted. When its matched power driver supplies the correct voltage, the liquid crystals line up and the glass looks substantially clearer.
DoorPlace USA is designing doors that pair properly specified switchable glass with concealed wiring and a clean control experience: a built-in door button and a handheld remote.

Made for Your Opening
DoorPlace USA builds custom wood doors in Texas. Smart privacy glass is a premium option we are developing for those doors, so every project starts with a review of the opening, the door style and how power will reach the glass.

Tell Us About Your Project →Smart Privacy Glass FAQ
How does switchable privacy glass work?
PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) glass or film contains tiny liquid-crystal droplets. Without power they scatter light, so the glass looks frosted. When the matched power driver supplies the right voltage, the crystals align and the glass looks substantially clearer. It changes appearance; it is not a blackout or sound-blocking product.
What happens when the power is off?
Standard PDLC returns to its frosted, private appearance when it has no power, including during a power outage. Exact behavior depends on the glass or film and driver selected for your project.
Can it be used in sliding barn doors?
We are designing for it. The main challenge is getting power safely to a door that moves, with no exposed or strained wiring. We are evaluating options for that before offering sliding smart-glass doors.
Can it be installed in French doors?
French and double doors are part of the concept. Each glass panel needs its own switchable glass and a safe way to bring power through the hinge side, which we plan for each project.
Will there be a built-in button and remote?
That is our design: a discreet button built into the door frame and a matching handheld remote. The control system is still in development and has not been tested or manufactured yet, so we will confirm the details with your quote.
Can DoorPlace USA build custom sizes?
Yes, we build custom wood doors to size. For smart glass, the size of each glass panel also depends on what switchable glass and film suppliers can produce, so we confirm panel sizes during the review.
Can an existing glass door be upgraded?
Sometimes. Self-adhesive PDLC film can be applied to some existing glass, depending on the glass type and condition, the edges, and how power can reach the door. Send photos and measurements and we will tell you whether it is practical.
How is electrical power supplied?
PDLC glass needs a matched driver that converts household power to the voltage the glass requires; it does not run directly from an ordinary battery. Wiring, the driver location and the moving-door connection are designed for each project using properly rated electrical components, and any connection to household power should be made by a licensed electrician. Door glass must also be safety glazing (tempered or laminated) as building codes require.
